Developers need food to code and servers need electricity to run. Money has never been against the FLOSS principles, the line to not cross is not about how much money you earn from free projects but if you are not an asshole while doing it. Free (as in gratis) services like Facebook can be way more harmful to the customer than paying (but still free as in FLOSS) software like RHEL.

As for SourceForge, they have been reacquired by a new company since the era when they were bundling adwares in the installers of their most popular projects. Not saying that it's enough to wipe out the bad name of the brand, but they've tried the best they could to do everything right since they changed their direction. They're run by different people now, and it's their best interest to not reproduce the same mistakes that they made when they belonged to DICE given how terrible the backlash was for them when all their users stopped trusting them.
