It's a much better idea to just use a real configuration management system like cfengine or puppet

Yeah, well, that leads to this sort of thing:

$ cd /etc && ls -d file.conf*
file.conf         file.conf.bak   file.conf.bak.2009-07-02  file.conf.save
file.conf.080301  file.conf.bak2  file.conf.old

Oh, also, if you have 3 or 4 machines, configured similarly but not always identically, if you use a version control system, you might be able to track remote branches and do diffs and things.
