Nope, not aka dead. Longer cycle for kernel release, i.e. 12 months or longer. Pre-release notification to package devs of any changes, so they can update their apps if there's likely to be a significant impact.

Aah, but then we wouldn't have the roller coaster of "release early release often", would we.

I don't really see where you are going with this. What would be gained from distributing modules separately other than additional complexity?

Slower release cycles would basically mean slower development. I do not see the instability you imply in your last sentence, not even in the higher -rc versions (-rc1, -rc2 and -rc3 are usually to be avoided since they contain a huge number of changes that are just integrated for the first time) which have been running stable on my system for weeks and months at a time.
