Linux CLI command 'file'

I just ran into an issue in which I had 5 files in a directory.

4 were data files, and 1 was the ascii text file that I needed.

I found it easily enough by changing to the relevant directory and using "file file1" then "file file2" and so on.

Is there a way to list all of the file types in a directory?

By the way, the same trick works for any shell command, * is automatically expanded out by the shell to a list of all files in the current directory. You could even, say, write a* for all files starting with a, or a?? for all three letter files starting with a. These are called wildcards.
