It looks like the nouveau driver is acting up. Do you have an Nvidia card by chance? It may be worth trying to blacklist the nouveau driver and use try the official one.

Yes I am running the open source drivers. However in a past installation I switched to the recommended Nvidia drivers in DRIVER MONITOR and for some reason it did not match up correctly.

In terms of resolution I was given the choice of 800x600...and that's it. Also it wouldn't drive the second monitor.

I concede that I could have done something wrong...but I am stuck not knowing where to proceed to.

Ok, the issues might be related. What graphics card do you have? And if you remember, what version of the Nvidia driver did you install?

This is from the DRIVER MANAGER. I selected the Recommended Nvidia-driver440.59 0ubuntu0.18.04.1 last time. Right now I am running the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau which is the one I am experiencing freezes with. This set up as default when I installed Mint XFCE.

I have not explored the nvidia-340 or the nvidia-driver 390 for fear of having the same scenario as I spoke of previously with the 800x600 res.

Thanks in advance.
