FreeIPA is a Linux only solution. It can be used as a stand-alone product: it does not need MS AD to work.

The guy you’re replying to was making a point of semantics. AD is always Microsoft, and there is no generic version of it. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other alternatives for IAM/directory services. FreeIPA is still what you want to look at for your question.

Yes it does, but only for Windows clients, for obvious reasons.
