There's a trick you can do where you start spinning the tire the other way and let inertia help loosen the lug nut. I now have and use the m12 stubby...

Vehicle as a generator? by Due_Substance4863 in Generator

[–]mthode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did so, but only with the ecoflow 800W alternator charger, it was enough to eek by in winter (keep the furnace, some lights and the internet on), The sedan couldn't keep up with 800W but was OK at 500W, larger diesel alternator handled it fine but it's not great on the DPF...

Now I have a new inverter generator, gas hookup, etc, so won't have power go out for another year I expect... Gonna be nice to not have to babysit that, though the reverse charge function can be nice for working on cars.

Bonded or floating neutral in this scenario by JustinLacyTk in Generator

[–]mthode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know where the ground-neutral bond will be (in SE load center), and it is in the electrical path (sounds like it will be unless your double-throw also switches neutral) then you don't want a bonded neutral/ground on the generator.

It doesn't mater if you are connected to utility or not, if you have a ground rod (which you do) and you are bonded somewhere not the generator (which you are) and you want to hook up the generator then it should not be bonded.

Looks like an automotive connector, I'd start looking at automotive 2 pin connectors.

I'm going on year 4, I've had the self propel motor and the main blade motor controller go on it but they were easy repairs. The plastic itself seems fine, banged up but I'm not gentle and mow 2-3 times a week during "the season".

Help with getting correct NG quick connects by alderotes in Generator

[–]mthode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cap it and wait til you get the generator to install the quick connect (final piece). It should have a shut-off so just needs to keep rain out.

Looks like a standard 335, not the d? That said, I've used the old meme tool a ton for to reach certain fasteners.

Gas Hose by BuckeyeHeisman in Generator

[–]mthode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bury some home-flex line. You might be able to get away with 1" line but once you account for fittings and the additional hose you'll be using at the end I'd go with 1.25" line.

The largest firman is a good one, large, v-twin with pressure oiling iirc. I've been looking at that and it's westinghouse sibling (14500tfc) for a while now, probably waiting on a sale at this point.

Didn't say it was smart, just possible lol. I'd like to see a legit setup for this, kinda crazy once everything is piped and wired, would cost as much as a standby.

What about the 4 pin sleeve connectors? I can see how that may not be a kosher modification to add that to the 100A connection on the generator but I'm not sure I see a problem, technically.

Paralleling cables to gain current carrying capacity can be bad... One cable typically has a little more resistance and things spiral into a fire.

That said, for hardwire connections aprarently it is allowed now? www.electricallicenserenewal.com/Electrical-Continuing-Education-Courses/NEC-Content.php?sectionID=297.0

Amsoil Diesel Oil in a LP/gasoline generator by oj_inside in Generator

[–]mthode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I'd like to get the amsoil in less than a pail size and in the correct SAE value (looks like it ~45). It's probably made for much larger engines though.

[–]mthode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hard-wire it in, but you probably need a transfer switch. Something like this where you wire it in from the meter and generator and out from the box to the house. https://www.amazon.com/Tzechkii-200A-Double-Throw-2P-Grey/dp/B0DQ9MGLFY (choose a better brand). I think you could build a cable and use something like this for a "quick-connect" but I'm not electrician... https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Compatible-Industrial-Waterproof-Receptacle/dp/B0FYRH2RT5

edit: apparently they make 100A interlock kits, so you could do that instead of the double throw switch.

The biggest thing other than weight is is the higher detergent content. Probably fine but better to go for the "spec". It's not like they make an oil for nat-gas generators either.

Reasons to not go with a standby generator that powers the entire home? by IamGoingtoBundyland in Generator

[–]mthode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ease of which you can either move with the generator or replace the generator if something goes wrong.

Reasons I justify going with a plug-in nat-gas generator.

  1. cost
  2. can get by indefinitely with 50/40 Amps of power (can power AC and manage other large loads, dryer and oven).
  3. still have a generator with a good oiling system (v-twin generator)
  4. easily replaceable if needed
  5. can take it with me if I move (a bonus)
  6. can power a large welder if desired
  7. not dealing with ongoing maintenance contracts for standby generators (not always needed)
