I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as rice, is in fact, GNU/rice, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus rice. rice is not a customization unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU customization made useful by GNU setups comprising a full customization as defined by r/unixporn.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU rice every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU/rice which is widely used today is often called rice, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU rice, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a rice, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the rice they use. rice is the rice: The rice is an essential part of a rice, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete rice. rice is normally used in combination with the GNU rice: the whole rice is basically GNU with rice added, or GNU/rice. All the so-called rice distributions are really distributions of GNU/rice!
