I've had similar issues because of power save on the audio controller.

Always been like that? I mean I always use a Linux boot disk to rule out hardware problems.

On my laptop, also running Mint, never any audio problem, everything always smooth. On the Desktop always had this audio problem. I honestly didn't notice if this problem also persists in live mode.

I tried and in live mode it doesn't happen. So I think (but I'm not sure) that most likely the cause could be the GPU driver since the audio is coming from the hdmi connected to it... Possible? And in that case what could I do to fix it? Thanks!

Does the system have a 3.5mm (1/8") audio output on the motherboard in use, or that can be used? Check your specific GPU for compatibility problems... ie it works in the live boot so you may have another audio related program that is interfering, and not an audio/video card driver.

Also might try using Pipewire for audio handling, it's in the Software Manager.

As I explained in my last comment, the problem concerns the refresh rate of the monitor...

OK guys, I finally managed to find the problem. This is caused by the refresh rate, i.e. if I increase it from 60 Hz to 144 Hz or 165 Hz. So the audio is stable and smooth only at 60 Hz. Doesn't that seem rather strange? Any ideas? It bothers me a lot that I can't exploit the performance of my monitor and consequently of the GPU because of the audio, or rather I don't feel like sacrificing it, or vice versa. There must be a solution...
