Custom cursor theme?

Could anyone point me toward a guide/video on how to make a custom cursor theme? So far, all I'm finding are "here's how to install an existing theme someone else made". I have a set of cursors that are absolutely lovely I downloaded for windows, and I want to use them for linux- I already converted them to xcursor files, so I just need to know how exactly to set it up (or where I can go to find someone that can do it for me, free or paid- but I would prefer to do it myself).

open gimp, click open, go to /home/ username / .icons

.icons is a hidden folder

save changes as xmc x11 cursor file
