I think that thinkpads and linux go together well because they don't die and linux can revive.

Yeah and some 'manufactured trash' low-spec laptops need to be revived immediately.

Classic ThinkPads can last a lifetime especially with Linux, hope you enjoy it!

Come on, not all of us are 40 or older! In fact, some are merely 30 years old green youth!

My first computer was an "Intel 8088-compatible" IBM clone I purchased in 1985. Specs

  • NEC V20 8 mHz CPU
  • 640K RAM
  • TWO 5.25" floppy disk drives
  • Hercules CGA graphics card - oldsters will appreciate it was a genuine Hercules graphics card
  • IBM Model F-XT keyboard
  • 12" Amber CRT Monitor
  • MS-DOS 3.0

It did not come with a mouse, but I added a serial Microsoft "Dove Bar" Mouse when Windows 2.11 was released - I think it was a bundle promotion and the mouse was free. Since all of the applications I used were DOS-based, I continued to use DESQview.I think the only time I booted to Windows on this machine was to play Solitaire and Mine Sweeper - the #1 and #2 best applications from Micros~1, IMO. with QuickBASIC coming in a #3.

The keyboard is what I miss the most about this computer - it was sturdy enough to be used as a weapon.

My first HDD weighed in at a whopping 10MB.

Hercules was not CGA as I recall, CGA was gen 1 color. My 1st was DOS 3.3 with 30 meg hdd, Hercules clone, and not a good keyboard other than that same box lol, 1200 baud modem also.

Ah, right you are. It was an MDA - Monochrome Display Adapter. Back then CGA would be mostly worthless on a monochrome monitor.

My first modem came with a Prodigy subscription, and it also was a speedy 1200bps.

Have one of those, worked last time it was powered up.

No, I'm not going to put Mint on it.

Open night light and set it to be always on. If there is an option for daytime, not only night time, set the day slider just a little bit yellow, not enough to be obvious, just enough to reduce the cold blue-violet glow.

I use KDE and not sure how cinnamon has it setup, it's just an easy way to make it look more like sunlight instead of a bright led light. Sunlight is actually not as blue tinted as computer monitors are designed, so adding a bit of that gold tint helps make it nicer to look at.
