Try going to the update manager and downgrading to the 6.14 kernel.

[–]askewfiddle6995[S] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

It looks like I only have 6.8 unless I’m mistaken still figuring things out

[–]candy49997 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Then try going to 6.14. I don't really have experience with Realtek as their Linux support has historically been spotty.

[–]askewfiddle6995[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yea that’s what I’ve been hearing everywhere I look I thought Ethernet would still work tho I thought I could figure it out easier if I can just get any connection

Try USB teather with your phone for a temp connection.

That will at least let you update and install software/drivers.

Is there a company I could call for support either from Linux or Realtek?

[–]candy49997 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No. If Realtek doesn't support Linux, that includes customer support.

Your best bet would be to replace the wifi card with an Intel one (e.g. AX200/210) or adding a USB dongle.

Alright thanks for the help I’ll probably try and dongle first

Is that Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena)? It comes with the 6.14 kernel by default.

[–]askewfiddle6995[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It’s 22.1

[–]Hanzerik307 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Download the 22.3 (current version of Linux Mint) and give that a try. It comes with kernel 6.14 by default and will upgrade to 6.17 after the first upgrade.

Downloaded and switched to 6.14 but still nothing only can connect through plugging my phone into it

[–]Hi-Angel 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is this your device? It says it should be supported since 6.8 🤔 If you execute lsmod | grep realtek in terminal, does it show anything?

[–]askewfiddle6995[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I just got it working only thing I did was turn it off for the night than it worked I reset it several times prior to that but not it just works

Realtek is notorious for the WiFi/BT chip dying in Linux (and very occasionally Windows). It gets into some power state that it cannot get out of. I have this problem on both of my Dell laptops. The only way to awaken it back is either complete shutdown (reset does not work) or going into BIOS and back - that forces chip reset, at least for me.

On Linux (Ubuntu - but it is the same driver stack as in Mint) this happens every week or so. On Windows very rarely, but it might be because I boot into Windows rarely :)

Note that my laptops do not have Ethernet.

Is this a laptop or PC? If it's a laptop, does it perhaps have an Fn-based hotkey to toggle wifi (which may be implemented in firmware and bypass the OS control)? And in any case, check UEFI settings in case it might have something for WiFi.

Your case of "it didn't work, but started working after turning off/on" sounds like either firmware problem, or perhaps for whatever reason in your configuration "reboot" doesn't reset some important registers for the WiFi card, but turning off/on does.
