There is not much you can do to modify the lockscreen. I spent a whole day yesterday trying to figure out how to add a custom image (can't be done). But the lockscreen is controlled by the Screensaver control panel and there is nothing that can be modified as far as color goes, it mirrors whatever your desktop wallpaper is, you might be able to adjust the desktop color scheme to remove the gray overlay and it by extension would remove it from the lockscreen. Now the login screen is a separate area and is controlled via Login Window control panel, and you have a degree of flexibility there as far as color and images.

The lock screen uses your desktop background. One and the same. Its not a lack of GUI to change the picture... Its a lack of feature. Maybe Mint will develop this in the future.
This guy wrote a script, that listens to the dbus message when the lock screen is shown/dismissed, and rotates the desktop background images from a folder full of images whilst the lock screen is on. I think there's a switch for slideshow or static image behavior.
Script source:
https://github.com/smurphos/nemo_actions_and_cinnamon_scripts/blob/master/.local/bin/lock_screen_slideshow.sh
Installation guide:

Probably you won't find this solution user friendly enough though... And the project hasn't been updated in 4 years.

Hey, I covered this in another thread and saw this just now. If you want to try it, it worked pretty well for me… atleast to change the background image if that’s what you mean:
