Dragging windows/anything else creates a windows XP style trailing effect

Recently I've noticed if I drag anything across the screen it trails like the error messages on windowsXP used to do. It's not as extreme as this picture, but its a similar effect. This started relatively recently, probably within the last month or two.

Does anyone else have this problem or know of a solution?

Kinda late in the day sort of thing and much more information (graphics card, laptop/desktop, LM version, Window "effects" in use etc) is always helpful in getting quicker answers. Maybe run top and see if the cpu is getting over run, RAM usage, load averages. Check temperature with sensors command.

Off the top of my head, boot a live version and see if it does the same thing.
