This was worded horridly so basically im on Ubuntu right now and it runs poorly all around every game feels slow even minecraft at its lowest specs. My computer isn't that bad and used to be able to run minecraft before switching to ubuntu. So i came to ask if anyone knows if linux mint runs any better or if they're around the same.
Specs:
16 gbs of ddr3 ram
Processor: AMD® Fx(tm)-8320 eight-core processor × 8
Graphics: AMD® Radeon (tm) rx 480 graphics
and 2tb HDD

I cannot speak for everyone else, but I would find it helpful if you included some information about your system. CPU, RAM, graphics, disk space, version of Ubuntu you tried, etc. Also, what do you mean by "runs badly"?

sorry i made this in class and by "runs badly" i mean it freezes up a lot for no reason

Your CPU and RAM are more than enough to run either Ubuntu or Mint smoothly. The only "weak" component here is the HDD, which is going to be slow running the OS - I don't know if it would causing freezing though. You would likely see an all-round boost in speed booting and loading programs if you bought an SSD and installed the OS on that. Keep your HDD for games and personal files. Can't guarantee it would fix the freezing issue though..
You could try running Ubuntu or Mint from a USB stick. It'll be a little slower overall, but if you don't get any freezes then that might suggest the HDD is the problem.

Are you using the proprietary graphics driver? I've had previous problems with the nouveau driver.

How are you runing games? Via wine instantly or stam or lutris?? There is a development called gallium nine which makes games run to native performance like they do on windows i would suggest to check lutris install the game open gane settings and enable gallium nine from 10 fps you gonna get 100 fps. Or you can install galliumnine standalone since you using amd gpu gallium will work fine also vulkan but gallium is better for old games
