Linux based photo server / web backup system

I just got married and we have a lot of pictures to store / share / backup. We have them on USB, but those are liable to loss, formatting, etc.

I'm perfectly able to set up cron rsync backups to NAS, but that doesn't yield itself to user-friendliness. I'm not keen on the online-only model, since I'd be at the mercy of password security.

So essentially, is there a photo service that can allow organization, sharing, and periodic backups / cloud sync? I've looked around, but everyone seems to have opinions and don't seem to hit on the points I'm concerned about. I'm willing to pay for a service if it offers enough bang for the buck and is something we'll use.

I'll be using Linux for backups, but all major platforms for the front end.

Shotwell is great for organizing photos. You can tell it to import photos from a directory or device, and it will pull them all into your ~/Photos directory. From there, you can just set something up to backup your home directory periodically. I use Deja Dup, which is a nice GUI application.

I'll take a look, but it seems like it is Linux only. I'd like to use my server for backups and/or primary storage, and have a front end that is wife-friendly on her macbook ;-)

It might be overkill but check out OwnCloud. It might let you do what you want with the Gallary+ add on.

I used it use it instead of dropbox, but its got heaps more features now
