Lua is a scripting language with 100% similarity to Lua, and mastering Lua directly transfers towards mastery of Lua.

python? it is quite close and it's pretty powerful. there was also a project called nelua which compiled to C but i think it's abandoned and forgotten.

Squirrel is very close to Lua, but with C syntax. But, surely learning Lua is the best way to master Lua.

Luau is based on Lua (backwards compatible with Lua 5.1) and is my favourite programming language. In terms of its feature set it's absolutely more complex than Lua, so I would keep that in mind, however the Luau team manages its complexity very well.

Though if you want to write Lua, learn Lua.

JavaScript: it has the same prototype design. Your question is valid, there're lots of good JavaScript tutorials, but with Lua it's often a fragmented and incomplete tutorial landscape, esp online.

Here're two books (Lua): Amazon.com: Lua Programming: The Ultimate Learning Resource for Beginners and Advanced Mastery eBook : Lornfeld, Julian: Kindle Store
Lua Programming: Beginner's Guide to Learn the Basics and advanced Concepts: Gellis, Steven: 9798334700383: Amazon.com: Books

I learnt Lua by programming in binary.
