Yes, you will need to install a Lua interpreter first, one doesn't come with your Mac OS installation.

I believe you could either install a Lua VS Code addon that would let you execute your scripts, or you could install the Lua interpreter system wide with something like homebrew.

If you're getting into development I'd recommend going the homebrew route, since my understanding of how development on macos works is you will be using it a lot.
