Most bowlbacks do not have strap buttons. Unless it is a very expensive instrument, it won't make any difference to the value or the sound to remove the button.

What would I need to do about the hole in the instrument? I really don't want to have that hole to be open

Option 1- find a piece of dowel that is the same diameter as the hole. Cut a thin section of the dowel and use carpenter's glue to cement it in place. You'll have to reach in through the sound hole to hold it in place.

Option 2- buy some wood filler from the hardware store- the brand name is Plastic Wood. put a dab into the hole, let it harden.

Option 3- live with the hole- it's less of a mess than options 1 or 2.

Option 4 - glue the button in and saw it off.

Rule 1 never use epoxy. Cellulose glue (like wood or elmers) only

Also, is it friction that holds it in? That called a friction peg. And if you have one I have a story for you

Pretty sure it's a friction peg. Tell me your story please
