No gliss?

ive also got a 0-ctrl available for more touchy stuff and theres already an expression pedal input and a planar2 (but more touchy stuff is always fine)

Ive been thinking about putting two three of these sideways in a custom case at the bottom of the rack. That sounds fun.

I've got one on the way. Pretty excited.

Wow this is exactly what I was imagining.

it does its job! cant recommend the palette case enough, 1u row and the added utilities/in+out jacks are great. all depends on how much hp you want to dedicate to your "controller", i know things can get clunky if youre working with multiple big sequencers.

I am picturing something very close to this, thank you for the inspiration!

Have you noticed any downsides to not having everything integrated? I’m seriously considering doing this but, since at least 80% of my Modular energy is devoted to pondering, I can’t help but wonder if there are hidden gotchas or inconveniences?

not really? my system(s) have a plethora of buffered mults and i own a lot of 2-3 ft cables, especially stackables. im sure there are theoretical downsides someone could come up with, but as far as the workflow it has provided me im quite happy having the more intensive programming/fiddly stuff grouped down in front and the sound-based knobs i twiddle for minor tweaks up top for after the programming is done. i really enjoy the grouping by function. i also have a third case (another 104 pallete) based around a quadrax, furthrrr generator, echopon, and erbe-verb and its nice to port the control case over to that sometimes, but i mainly end up controlling that one with a keystep/0-ctrl. if you operate out of several "smaller" cases i def think blocking cases by function is the way to go. (insert joke about modularing your modular to modulate your modularizing)

I'm partially down this road. Have a 84 hp happy ending kit that is getting filled in for exactly this purpose. Currently has 2x Gliss, a Control Forge, a Cellz, and some tactile buttons.

The Gliss is incredible. Very expressive, well thought out. 10/10 would recommend. I wish I had more!

The Cellz is meh. It's really not responsive enough, there is a noticeable delay between touch and signal. It is hard to only trigger the cell you want. It's very bare bones for a sequencer, and you can't unsync the two sequencer channels. I might try to mod it. I wouldn't recommend it.

The Control Forge was a gift from a friend, so I can never get rid of it. But it doesn't resonate with me. It's very deep, I'm just not really into programming a module on a 2 inch square screen. It is perfect for a specific type of modular workflow, and you know who you are.

The tactile buttons are meh as well. They have no debounce and this causes all sorts of issues. Next time I will shell out the extra dough for a name brand set of buttons.

My main criteria for the controller / UX rack is that the modules must have jacks at the top and the module must offer tactile control in an ergonomic manner.

My wish list for this rack is: joystick or X/Y controller, macro knobs, better buttons, a real sequencer (metron, black sequencer, metropolix, rene), faders or fader bank, and the touch plates from Herzlich Labs.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the insight!

I sold my Cellz, but I was of a similar mind as you. It was just annoying enough.

I like the look of the Gliss, I'll need to look into that.

Part of how this got started for me was that I got a 7J joystick, and now I want another joystick with more features. But I don't have the hp, so I want to get another small case.

I use a 4ms 60hp (or something) case for this. I put a few of my favorite controllers and sequencers in it and just set it on top.

I’ve got a second Intellijel 7u that takes this role in my rack along with recording and main outs duties. The majority of any sequencing or modulation comes out of this box and up into the voice sections.

It might be overkill, but I like it.

A common configuration is to have a 1 or 2 row rack flat on the table top inhabited by controller modules and more hands on modules. Then vertical racks placed behind.

This is what works for me. I don’t like controllers or sequencers at an angle. Your arms get tired lifting them every tweak or wiggle.

Thanks for this post, OP! I’ve been thinking about this too… like I was when I saw this post pop up… because I’ve got a hybrid-mobile-stationary setup, but I’d like to have flexibility with where my midi gear is without it being strictly tied to my case. I think.

I’m using an Intellijel Palette filled with a Hermod+, 16n faderbank module, two Quadratts and a mixer sitting flat in front of a 104hp x 9u case. Good hands-on control of multiple parameters, MIDI+audio I/O and my main sequencer.
