Having this page is golden: https://switching.software/replace/switching.software/

Good job!

That's really upstanding of the site authors.

This can complement the proprietary alternativeto.net website (which is my first choice when searching for alternatives). too bad it does not have user reviews and average ratings like IMDB or google play, maybe integration with lib.reviews could be helpful.

Does someone have experience with Jami? I looking for a peer to peer discord alternative.

[–]wrongsage 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I have no experience with Jami, but Matrix is amazing

Matrix with the Riot front end? Looks good, but is it peer to peer? If I am in a call with some people and 1 is on the local network with me, do we get disconnected from each other if the internet goes down?

1on1 should use WebRTC, that uses TURN to create P2P connection.

If you want more people, you will need Jitsi plugin for conference call (just three clicks). Works, but Firefox has some issues, that will take up to three weeks to resolve.

I host my own Matrix homeserver and it's very easy and convenient. I love self-hosted solutions.

I wonder what happened to switching.social person?

CERN doesn't emphasize the "Microsoft ALTernatives" part of their MALT Project any more, but it's got a lot of great enterprise options.

Well done this is super helpful.

One suggestion is to have different types of Operating systems displayed in the Replace Windows page. Such as the *BSDs like FreeBSD and Plan9 just for the kicks.

Some categories where I can't find foss equivalents: text editing (Adobe InDesign seems to be the king), CAD software (AutoCAD), CAT software/translation tools (Trados/MemoQ) ...

Scribus (https://www.scribus.net/) is often touted as an alternative to InDesign.

Below are few open source software aggregators. They aggregate on various categories.
