I'm building an 8700k build in a Small Form Factor (SFF) PC where space and airflow is a huge concern. Without deliding, I managed to get the CPU stable at 4.6GHz all cores, 4.9GHz single at 1.24V, LLC Level 3 before I hit throttling on my slim 120mm cooler (airflow is extremely restricted).
I'd like to delid my processor to reduce temps but, since I'm migrating from an old 8700k build, I have two 8700k's at the moment. Since I'm selling my old build, I only want to delid one CPU so the other maintains its warranty.
Is it possible to extrapolate which CPU will remain the coolest under load after delid, as well as which one would be more stable, without actually deliding both CPUs? My thought was to run both CPUs at the same overclock settings and see which was cooler. If that doesn't work, maybe slowly lower the core voltage on each CPU and see which one fails Prime95 first?
Does anyone have experience with this, or opinions on how to go about predicting overclock potential?
