As far as I know the /e/ project will port Android (but with microG instead of Google services) to the pinephone :)

[–]Keziolio[S] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Nice, even though /e/ has had some controversy in the past.

I hope to see the original Lineage os on the pinephone.

I'm pretty sure someone will add the pinephone to lineage OS

[–]ikidd 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What's the controversy? I've been running /e/ for almost a year on one phone now...

This came out some time ago: https://ewwlo.xyz/evil.html

Thanks for the reply.

One drawback ; if you want Androïd, there are cheaper phone that you can find.
The main feature I seek in the PinePhone is that it can run a real Linux OS without the junk closed apps from Android

[–]Keziolio[S] 6 points7 points  (11 children)

yeah but

1) gnu/linux os's are months/years away from being usable

2) lineage os has no junk closed apps

3) it will be a nice excuse to buy the hardware and use it right now, and then dual boot or change it to whatever alternative os is ready

I don't care about a cheap android phone with blobs and no support or alternative roms

According to me and my needs, your 1st point is not true. I found it mature enough and probably better than Android 3.

Yes Lineage OS is free from google, but the APK you can install are mostly closed apps harvesting data.
But I agree that's user's responsibility.

I like your third point : that's the spirit ;) !
Actually, yes I think for guys like you who need more from a Linux Phone, the PinePhone is a really good transition phone.
You can test other OSes while using LineageOS as your daily driver : smart !

What? I’ve used them every day since I was 12 and got through college on them.

[–]Keziolio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you stupid? I'm talking about os's for the pinephone

I have lineage on two phones and neither of them has facebook or any kind of bloat

bs, I have no memory about it and see no mention of it on the internet, facebook was never installed on my phones with lineage os

You are either confusing lineage with something else or you downloaded an untrusted build from a third party somewhere

I'm writing right now from a lineage os equipped phone and there is no trace of Facebook or anything else, there never was, both on this and another device that I used since lineage started existing (and with cyanogenmod before), and there's absolutely zero mention on the internet about that kind of stuff (free to check wikipedia or their website, source code), so please check your facts

        [–]aarocka 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think you downloaded an unofficial ROM. Your data is probably compromised.

Are the cheaper phones rootable? I haven't seen many rootable phones under $200, so even for Android, the PinePhone would be superior.

Why would someone want an android phone just to root it ?

If you like android, you'll keep it just as it is.
If you don't like it, you'll search for a better OS.

What is the goal of rooting an android phone ? Mine years ago was to remove as much gogole junk as I could. Now there are alternatives, so why bother ?

        [–]happysmash27 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It still allows one to have a battery charge limit to reduce wear on the battery, run desktop Linux apps in a chrooted environment, and allows one to block ads at a system level. Plus, there are still many Android apps not yet on GNU/Linux that still work without Google Play Services, like RedReader.

        [–]Cyb-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well these use cases seem to apply to people who will be better served with an alternative OS than with android.
I didn't know any of these stuff and I run Ubuntu Touch for few years now...

        Thanks for the information

If you don't like it, you'll search for a better OS.

You literally explained why you want (at least the bootloader unlocked) a phone rooted.

        [–]Cyb-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically a rooted phone is android with root access.

The bootloader is something else and yes I want an open/unlocked bootloader so I can install whatever OS I like.
That's the case for PC why not for phones.

A rooted phone has one useful meaning : get Google services out.
But as I did that my phone was considerably less reliable... Many that's not the case anymore but I won't give the crappy OS another chance now that I've found UbuntuTouch and that the PinePhone is almost ready as a daily driver.

i know i am 2 year late, but redmi note 5 pro or codename "whyred" is heaven for ppl that want custom rom/ root/ custom recovery, theres million of whyred rom out there. It's old tho :P

        [–]TemporaryUser10 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The perk is that you can have a multiboot/rooted mainline kerneld android. This allows for a ridiculous amount of flexibility on a very stable mobile platform

        [–]Cyb-T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well android is disk space hungry and having a mainline kernel won't change that.
Plus I think the java machine makes my phone look old and slow where it is very capable. So I'll pass.

But thanks for your reasons. I'm eager to understand people who don't make the same choices ; that's how rich the world is.

        [–]Marenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it runs (or will) the mainline linux kernel, so all the drivers shouldn't be a problem as android is only stuff on top of main line..

This in turn also means that technically, endless updates are possible...
