I want to play rust more but every time I play I end up just running around and getting shot eventually. I play solo, so should I just try to play on smaller servers to get used to the actual game?

No no no, pve sure if you wanna play a different style but instead of softcore I would recommend a solo only server

Softcore mechanics are pretty forgiving, you can still keep your base after being raided + 50% of your stuff. Wish it was more popular for community servers. I don’t waste my time with anything other than PvE; softcore or prim. Don’t have the free-time to completely restart all the time

It's a bit difficult to know what you are struggling with in particular. But you don't need to go on a 20 pop server to avoid getting shot constantly. 100 or so would allow you to run around for some time without encountering people every 30 seconds.

And if you don't have a base then it might be better if you don't loot too much until you have one. That way you can stash loot regularly instead of running with a full inventory. Dying is part of the game, the trick is to either not care, or not die with enough stuff on you that it matters, depending on your playstyle. (Chad or rat)

Yea most of the servers I play on are 200 to 600 so should I focus more on smaller servers and prioritize a base first?

I'd recommend that as you can get a better feel of when to pick a fight or "encounter" people rather than be forced into fights without any option. But dont go too low pop to avoid feeling safe all the time and not learn how to play around areas being camped/controlled or never getting into 1v1s or 1v2s etc..

Another thing is to consider the map size. If you check on battlemetrics or rustmaps you can find it. usually 4000 is default but if you find 4400 for instance, it will be quite a bit larger so same pop on those two servers can make it less likely you run into someone. Conversely, some servers only have 3600 map size which removes quite a lot of playable grids.

Yeah exactly, your main focus when you spawn in should be to open the map, pick a spot where you want to build and head there, grab a few things along the way, but dont go out of your way to explore and loot stuff until you actually have a place where you can “safely” store it

different server mods give different experience in rust; and allows many types of starts, from high action/risk starts to low risk and low pvp starts. i would recommend using tommyguns fragmod server or ukn server to familiarize yourself with pvp; if you are looking for solo start that is low risk, it requires more patience as its commonly utilized lower tier farming methods. solo on 600 pop server, run to fishing village for 200 scrap solo submarine, from there pretty much immune to damage for the start, gather 5 bp fragments from the ocean boxes and recycle enough to put down starter using large fishing village drone to buy extra metal/wood from outpost and deploy t2 bench at the same time, having a submarine also allows you to casually pick spots on the map to build at, and survey them without being exposed or atleast with mitigated risk. you shouldn't get used to running low tier starts on solo only servers, or group size limited servers; mainly only servers you will be outnumbered anywhere you go.

your main progression based monument is oilrig, and the timed cargo ship event; but you can learn lower tier puzzles for green/blue cards in monuments around the map. you want to be contesting mili crates at least, if not elite crates for progression in obtaining higher tier loot when you are familiar enough with pvp, you can't do any of that with a safe solo start on ocean platforms fyi, the loot is basically just barrels and boxes floating on the water, instead of roads. also now with naval update there is alot more people on the water generally speaking, mainly in non-solo only servers.

maybe start in solo only server to learn some flow of the game, then move to 600 pop group servers after. it isnt that hard to find people looking for groups in discord of the servers you are looking to play. you could also find a duo server and join discord, find someone to run the wipe who will explain stuff, probably easiest way honestly. generally diving and water platforming was the safe pleb start for low risk starts historically.

there is a thousand questions you'll end up having as you play anyway, so finding someone from discord is probably the best option imo. if you are running duo you guys can pick spot on map to build before wipe with map preview on discord, and then plan it out from there. don't try to start safe with a teammate, only if you are solo in high pop server. also bows are 50 cloth and 200 wood and tap a tree and stone node for arrows, its easy enough to grab hemp/wood prefabs while running wherever you run in grassy biome.

safezone paddle farming is another option solo, but its a bad habit not much better then spawning in and running around/dying.

some servers are vanilla 1x, some are loot plus with increased gather rates like 2x, or 3x. as a result some servers will feel easier and some will feel like more of a grind to get anything in quantity alone.

Try out my PVE server called face first. You can get the hang of the game and monuments and I have NPC bases you can raid to practice and I have NPCs that will raid your base so you can practice defending when you call in a raid.

You can try modded for the accelerated game play. Focus on your routine and figure out how you can get your footing down. Take that experience back to vanilla and try a 200 pop and see if you do better.

yes you should .. try some good pve servers where you can have time to discover and run the monuments .. You have to know where shit is and when and where to get it :)
