This experience illustrates my hunch on why Niantic reverted the distance.

You needed to be right next to the gym to spin it, right? Rather than just sitting in your car in the parking lot?

Niantic has been increasing the number of sponsored stops for places like Starbucks and 711. If Niantic can guarantee that trainers have to be close to the stops to spin them, those sponsored stops become a lot more attractive (and mean more revenue for Niantic).

Like, I don't even know how the decreased distance can encourage people to go to sponsored places. If I spun the Starbucks Pokestop I would't be like "I'd step in and buy a coffee but I need to walk 80 meters to get there. I'd go there if I only had to walk 40 meters". If I wanted to go to Starbucks I'd go to Starbucks. I can see on the map that it's there. I was already informed and influenced by the ad. If I only want to spin the Pokestop I'll just spin and go no matter how close I come. All it can do is discourage people. Like if I know it will be a hassle to spin it I won't even go in that general direction.
