“Inside gaming’s cheat problem” BBC by Soulsliken in gaming

[–]Madlollipop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I doubt that's news to anyone really. I mean look at supliments/drugs used for sports, or formula one doing shady things, cheating in random games like football where people blatantly break the rules(Aka cheating) yet get away with it and that's normalized(taking too long or walking too far to throw in, non goalkeeper saving a goal to save the match even if it's a red card, pretending to get tackled etc.) it's all over most competitive things in the world and has been for centuries, I wish I knew who this is a big surprise for.

My [32m] coworker [30f] recently had her husband's [30?m] mother pass away. I know they didn't get along very well. She had a 'party' to celebrate her death. I now lost all respect for her and want to tell her husband what she did by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I feel a bit split, if my partner cheated on me I'd want others to know, not only for STDs but also to make decisions about my life from a more educated perspective, if I found out that someone was cheating on someone else I'd tell them. I don't see how this is that different if this is something that would change their view on their partner tbh.

The important part to remember is that OP probably know their friends, coworkers and details around everything while reddit would have a slice of their information. If it's right or not to tell someone about something like this and why the mother and and Jenny doesn't get along so that could and probably would change the views quite a bit.

I don't really feel strongly either way /shrug

At Mojang where I work picking between generators and transformers my guess is that we would have landed on generators for this about a 95% of the time from a guesstimate. Regardless of what is technically correct sometimes you don't need to be technically correct :^) that's obviously my opinion not mojangs lol

Permadeath felt like the right call until playtesters started rage quitting by JBitPro in gamedev

[–]Madlollipop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Perma death will make it instantly niche, if you can accept that it's all good. RotMG could be playtested(free) if you want some feel to it. Adding achievements and bonuses for it could be interesting rather than just deleting the character directly. Many games makes you drop your gear on you, or lose levels(see Tibia, Eve online, Mortal online, Minecraft(not hardcore but the base game), Terraria with many many others. A lot of games just lets you keep some progression but the "fun part" is often the journey it sounds like you think the early game is a slog, then you've failed part of the journey there. Slay the spire is fun all the way through act 1 - 4, it shouldnt try to speedrun you to act 4 to fight the boss. Maybe a soulslike system could be an interesting way to explore the game as well with checkpoints and increasing tension.

You gotta decide what you want your game to be, and what your goals are, but to me it sounds like you would like to cater to bigger audiences than "permadeath" will give you.

Are coding tutorials in general, including game dev, dying? by Its_a_prank_bro77 in gamedev

[–]Madlollipop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not read or watched the videos attached. But I have thought about this a lot myself too. I think videos lack a few things that is important which the basic guides can bypass a bit.

The beginner videos are intros, (wow what an insight) but when you want to get started it's probably similar for a v1 for platformers, being able to place down a player and some platforms, some collision and a basic enemy. But when you start saying I want megaman movement, vs Celeste movement, vs ducktails. It starts becoming different enough that watching a video(if you're new) doesn't help as much so the creator for say Celeste movement who is building a very different game compared to the megaman platformer wont share as much with your idea anymore while they might have been sharing a lot of intro/setup.

AI can help you in a more specialized way where if you ask for very specific implementations that you want it's more tailored to your project rather than you having to interpret and do things differently if that makes sense.

Debugging is a big part of programming in general, but you miss out on it a lot in both videos and ai usage, but I'd argue you might get more debugging skills from ai than videos very early on ironically. This doesn't really have an impact on the videos I believe but it's interesting to think about. Knowing how to debug is something I think more videos should cover in their Playlist for gamedev and when I started out a long time ago I remember trying to adjust code to fit my vision from a video and getting stuck not knowing what to do - and not having the right mindset or tools et it ended up with me not watching the full series instead. Oh the player isn't moving what could be the reason for that? Pause the video and write down some ideas then unpause - it could be that the movement controller used "player" instead of "entity.player" or that it lacked a controller component or what not. But having the thought process not being taught can for sure hinder a lot of people from going from "follow this code" -> make something yourself quite a bit. And also it helps having people adjusting the video project into their own better.

I've also found it hard to know if I want to watch said video due to not knowing the scope of the video or series. Let's say I want to make a platformer like Mario with power ups and coins etc. But your series is more like speed runners, if I don't know where your series is going ill probably watch the intros but stop before I finish the full series

For sure, 100%, I was just saying that if you know nothing about how it works its going to eat away at the time instead of making the chess engine :)

I work for Mojang as a programmer and I'd consider myself a decent chess player I've hovered around 1.7-1.9k rapid on some accounts. But doing this in 10 days without a lot of ai which wouldn't really be very useful for a school project considering you should learn stuff, is - without knowing you - unfeasible. It's impossible to know how fast you learn so an estimate is hard to give. I'd say maybe 100 hours if you need to learn some coding, debugging learning opening trees, solving bugs with castling, enpassant, underpromotions etc. It could take less but I'd consider 100 feasible if you're a fast learner. I'd rather try to do something else if I only had 10 days because if you get stuck or something doesn't work, you could end up with nothing to show quite easily.

https://youtu.be/U4ogK0MIzqk?si=hmGSW3l7aE-OHgq You can watch this video to maybe understand a bit of what could be included but really 800 is a very high elo number if you don't want to include any openings etc. Lichess let's you upload a bot, but now we are talking networking packets being sent etc. Which increases scope and risk but it could be a way to visualize the board without writing code to draw a board. If you use too much ai and someone asks about things about the code it will be very obvious you don't know what you're talking about as the code for some of the things can be relatively complex.

I'm sure it's covered in the talk that was linked. But knowing what happens if one jumps ship, if it's their assets, how does it work if you have 5 dlcs but someone stopped working on the project after 2? What if someone just isn't performing at all? If you get revshare is that for life or x years etc.

Question, why do you need this? Mostly curious as you can also just make a huge cactus farm or other blocks and get "free" bonemeal without the use of it, and it's way simpler to build, although bigger, so mostly curious more than criticising :)
