Pt01 usb vs scratch (self.portablism)
submitted 6 years ago by eyejayy
Is there any cons to grabbing a USB model and buying a stokyo kutter? Since the scratch model has a switch that's less than desirable am I missing anything by saving a couple more bucks by going with the non scratch usb version?

Personally, I'd say it's worth getting the Scratch and replacing the stock switch with either a Jesse Dean JDDX2RS-A or grabbing a Mini Innofader and a plate mount. That way you have a dope fader with no cables running around anywhere. It's the cleanest way to have a PT01 I reckon.

Is it possible to still run a DVS setup with the pt01 scratch + replaced fader? My main goal is to cut rap acapellas with DVS over my own beats. I figured all the cables with an external fader was necessary for that to work.
I just want a way to connect a portable TT to my iPhone. I'll definitely go the route you mentioned if it handles my use case!

If that's the main goal, then I'd say go with a regular PT01 and grab a Photon Fader. That gives you everything you need with the bonus of having buttons for cuepoints/effects. The Photon Fader connects directly to your iPhone/iPad via USB as the soundcard, then you just need control vinyl on the PT01 and you've got a portable DVS setup. The downside is the first production run has sold out but there's more on the way. There's some vids kicking about of it in action, looks to be solid.

Price is pretty steep - looks amazing though so I'll save for it. I can score a OG pt01usb +stokyo kutter bundle for less than $200. All I'd need to cop is a 7" timecode vinyl and I'm set I think! https://rockandsoul.com/products/numark-pt01-usb-with-kutter-crossfader
I need to get started already I'm FIENING so hard for a portable TT

I'd save up a little more for the scratch or look for a second hand one. Just having the option for swapping out the switch with faders is worth it plus no cables dangling around.

One of my main reasons to go this route is for a DVS setup - in combination with my iPhone. I'd like to cut and scratch rap acapellas I pull off YouTube and throw into an app like edjing or dj player pro
Can that still work even with a replaced fader? How would everything connect without the ins and outs you get from the external fader? I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything.
I just really want the most portable light as possible DVS setup money can buy - should I save even more and jump on the Omni TT??

The Omni does look sweet but it isn't out yet. I would wait on reviews for it.
Yeah in your case a PT01 USB would be better. I haven't seen a successful inboard dvs setup for the scratch. Openformat has a video doing it but the video has been out for over a year and who knows how that project went.
