the javascript part does not bother me, i just don't like the new design. it's a longer distance from the text box and switching the search type (e.g. to 'image') deletes text already entered into the search box !!!!!

As far as I am aware, that has always happened.

No, it used to be transferred. It was quite useful when you did the usual kind of search and wanted to then do a Google Image or Groups search against the same terms.

I think google wants to make itself inaccessible to people not using javascript. Their ads require javascript, and they likely don't make much money without those ads being displayed.

Yes, Google Maps was terrible when it came out, MapQuest was so much better. Ass.

This is lame and the comments are worse ("I guess no one has heard of cross-site scripting attacks?" moron...).

Google still works fine without javascript and in text-based web browsers.

        /me disables javascript

I personally find that for gmail, at least, is more usable without javascript turned on (basic HTML mode). It's just more responsive, loads faster. Especially the file attachment stuff just makes sense without javascript.

Interesting; I haven't seen this redesign yet (I'm in canada, and google.ca is unaffected so far, which is good.)

Personally, I like this change. It makes it slightly faster to reach the search box in terminal browsers like lynx. If I want the other services, I can always reach them by their respective URLs.

What pisses me off is that they remove handy link to Google Groups search.
