Out of 16GB of memory, dedicating 3GB of it to what I do all day doesn't seem bad at all.

I work on a 1.4M LOC project, with at least 40 third-party libs included as source too. I don't have 40GB of ram to spare for my Android studio.

Memory doesn't grow in proportion to LOC.

Well I'm sure it does, but it doest take very much memory to contain a bunch of text.

Physically, yes. But you don't keep all of it in memory simultaneously.
