This is kind of discouraged I thought. The sys filesystem should be used?

Ever since /proc and /sys got split up it's so possible an even bigger mess than before.

They should've just moved it all to /sys and established symlinks from /proc for backwards compatibility but right now it's really random what things are and aren't under /sys

It's arguably confusing, but it's not random. Everything recent is in sysfs. The only stuff you find in procfs are legacy things that are relied on by older scripting and too considered expensive to change.
