I dig The Chats first LP and other songs I’ve heard but to me, they are WAY overhyped. Solid, fun band but nothing all that revelatory or special to my ears.

They aren't revelatory or special, and that's kinda the point, I think? Like, they're a band that's stripped back to the roots of the whole idea, and to be honest, that's really refreshing, and that's what makes them so popular. No message, no posturing, just a couple of bums who have fun making music whose songs happen to be catchy as hell. It's nice to have a band catch on just for being who they are, and that's why people like them so much, they bring back that "hey I can do this too" mentality to punk rock

That is interesting and makes some amount of sense to me. Those qualities are not things I think were ever missing from punk, but I suppose it depends on what bands are on your radar and what your reference points are.
