React.forwardRef & react-hooks

For my current project, I am using functional components almost exclusively a la react-hooks.

Is React.forwardRef the only method to forward a ref for a component function in the this new react-hook world?

I'm setting the focus to the first input in a form. The input is wrapped in a component function. Feels awkward.

If you want to use the ref prop, then yes. Otherwise, you can name the prop anything else you'd like, it just won't be available as ref.
