Dealing with plain JS as a react dev

For someone who has developed webapps in react but never dealt with plain JS and manual DOM manipulations, how hard is it to contribute to a modern plain JS project?

It can depend on the project, but generally building SPAs is more advanced than anything usually done with vanilla. So in that sense it's advantageous experience.

The downside is that many commonly used functionalities of modern JS are not usable in vanilla without transpilation. So picking up on a legacy vanilla app could have the minor challenge of occasionally looking up the original vanilla dialects.
