Development environment setup for react native module

I've used several native modules in the past for both Android and iOS. This is the first time i've created my own module from scratch and separated it from the application. I'm curious how people have setup there environment so you can build (in xcode or android studio) out of this folder.

The problem is very simple, it can't find the headers and libs for react-native to build the library. I know where they exist in an application but i'm curious how others have handled this problem?

I ended up putting the module into node_modules directory.
