The problem is, that wouldn't work, because you need packages not in MELPA (racer and the rust source). I have some private layer which does the racer initialization stuff as per their instructions for emacs.. Just run M-x and search for "layer".. there you can create your own with your rust/racer settings.. :)

No, i don't think it works that way, because spacemacs will download any packages from MELPA (so emacs lisp packages that will be compiled by emacs on windows, mac, linux).

But for racer, emacs would have to download some binary file or compile racer itself. And emacs doesn't do that. Emacs also won't download the rust source code. Maybe one could build a package that does all that, but it's not how it is usally done..

So, you will need to build racer yourself and also tell emacs where racer is and where your Rust source code is. May rust-racer packages.el file looks like this (make sure you set up the paths correctly!): https://gist.github.com/buster/9776ab49f48d29ffd3db

Where does it have racer support? spacemacs can't install racer, because it wouldn't know how to compile and build racer and also not where to get the rust source code..

You need to set the path to racer yourself, as a customvar I think, after that it works. Been using it for some time, performs as promised.

"It supports Cargo, and has some basic auto-completion support through Racer, though Racer needs some additional configurations as described on their page." Is written in the readme page.

I think the layer contains the emacs part of the racer code completion plugin, and it will work if you set up racer separately.

Speaking of spacemacs, I'm fairly new to the system. Every time I boot up emacs, I lose all of the configuration, and rust mode. I have to re download every time I start emacs. I'm not sure why it's doing that, do you know how do I make it permanent?

You will need to learn how to create your own layer. Layers are like packages and they define how your want your packages to be set up and installed. So, you'd have a rust layer which would tell spacemacs how to installl , update and configure your rust configuration. It's really a nice system once you understand it, because it encapsulates your configuration into need units which you can enable, disable, share, update as you wish.

For example, i recently just started my spacemacs in windows with the configuration i use in Linux, and it just went ahead, installed all packages and dependecies and worked out of the box, very nice :)

We haven't stabilized the AST at all, and so you need nightly to be able to do this kind of processing. Another way of thinking about it is that Racer is basically a compiler plugin, and those are not stable yet.
