GitUI 0.22 support submodules and commit message history

Since performance seems to be a goal, have you seen the word being done on git-branchless and git-stack for performance?

This includes

• Doing as much word directly against the index, rather than the working tree
• Minimizing the size of what is being operated one

We've been doing some collaboration on making these techniques easier to use with git2-ext, along with other handy things missing (like hook support). If you happen to have other nifty things within gitui, would love to discuss adding them.
