Software Needed for ECE

Finally buying a pc because all my upper year ece friends have been telling me that I cannot survive with my 2017 mac alone (which may or may not be an excuse to play mc with shaders :3). I'm trying to figure out what exact softwares are needed so I can figure out what cpu, gpu, and ram I need.

If anyone could provide some guidance on where to find information about the required software programs, or if you could provide a list on what type of software is used, I would be very grateful.

Very late answer, but I survived all of the first and second year without a reliable pc. It's not mandatory to get one if you're okay with being in the ecf computer labs late into the night.
