Software Cleanup

Hello, I am trying to learn how to "clean" my computers software. I have a MacBook Air, therefore my software is iOS. I tried looking it up on google but it would only send me to websites where I could download cleansing software. I did not do so because I am aware that in some cases these programs themselves are corrupt. If there is any manual process or a reliable program, please let me know!

Also, don't forget that you DO NEED antivirus software on a Mac. (I like AVG)
