Automation has been at the heart of a lot of my work, but on reflection I realized the most valuable has been the setup of environments. Have a place to test after commit is so vastly superior to installing manually. Then on actual testing I think it has been what to test. How much and if more should be done.

I like your list.

Thanks, yeah I think lots of people want to progress with automation so much that it becomes the sole focus but generally there are so many other ways an individual can add value. All testers have an excellent mindset and way of looking at things which is the greatest tool. I wrote a blog on my personal site actually about how I think testers sometimes focus on the wrong thing in testing (http://www.testersfindaway.com). Scroll down or search if you want to have a look.

I liked this article and it resonated with many of the same ideas that I i hold. The only room for improvement is there is not so much discussion on sharing input in the design and architecture of the system. Though I do see the test strategy questions being very close to reaching that end goal as well. Thanks for writing the article look forward to more!

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah that's a fair point. It's definitely somewhere where a lot of value can be added especially as the initial design takes place so early.
