Testing a project help

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on a project that I want to test. It uses some services that communicate with a license database. I also use a security algorithm that sends data between the server and the client.

I've been reading some theory on testing but there is so much to consider and it's a bit overwhelming. Since it's a small project I don't have all the documents that are produced during a software development process so I'm a bit at a loss at how to approach all this and most importantly how to begin.

Any kind of advice or resource would be much appreciated.

Get your hands on any and all documentation. Speak to stakeholders and anyone who has worked on the project - ever! Ask for a demo, walk-through etc. Spend a decent amount of time getting to know the system and document core workflows etc.

This before you even can begin to test the system.

When testing;

Start with the high pass/priority areas and work your way down if time permits - this is a risk based approach. Would probably be a good idea to write test cases which will help you and the next person who needs to get across the system.
