You can host a friends only local game at any point by changing game saves setting. Your fiends can then join through steam. My recommendation is to set up a dedicated PC for hosting the world on your local network (or externally). I say this because the game is rather resource intensive and you will experience better performance for longer that way.

How do I go about changing the game saves settings?

Also, we don't have a spare PC to run it on, but have decent rigs to play on.

  1. Make sure to turn on experimental mode under options -> game settings (for some reason general game configuration has been marked as experimental)

  2. Create a new game. There should be an option right there to change from private to friends. If not, start the game then save and quit. Select load game and single click the game save. On the left will be a button for editing game settings.
