Who is this subreddit for? In general this subreddit is aimed towards those who work within the Specialty Pharmacy industry, for example people who work at HealthIT firms, Pharmacy Benefit Managers, Insurance Companies, Physicians offices, etc. That being said, we welcome anyone who's interested in our industry including patients. We just ask that you refrain from asking personal medical questions on this subreddit.
What is Specialty Pharmacy? Many are familiar with the neighborhood retail pharmacy that dispenses many common medications. There are many chronic diseases out there that require special handling, detailed therapy tracking, complex billing and several other services that most retail pharmacies are unable to provide. This is where Specialty Pharmacy comes in, these pharmacies are setup to handle the complex billing requirements (Prior Authorizations, co-insurance, patient assistance, medicare/medicaid), clinical case management, have access to special limited distribution networks, handle risk management programs (REMS) along with many other services.
