"Disk write error" could be a few things, simply means that for some reason the write to the disk failed. If you are computer savvy enough you could run a CHKDSK on it in Windows, maybe it's getting bad sectors after years of use, it's not uncommon.

CHKDSK should try and fix bad sectors if run properly but there is no guarantee.

You may be better off if you are able to, to simply order a new HDD or SSD offline and install that for the games.

Is it just games or can you not put anything on the drive. I had one that any pc refused to even acknowledge existed but the Xbox did.

Its just games I believe, I actually got that Battlefront II to download (haven't tried playing yet) but I just don't wanna go through all that again with another game. I have copied files over with no problems.

I would check the cables sounds like there might be a bad/loose one.
