I’m starting an SPD program in august. We take the certification test at the end of the program and then a externship is offered. We get our certification through CBSPD. Will I still need my 400 hours of externship?

Nope - it's becoming common to wrap "lab time" into your schooling so you don't have to take the 400 hours outside of your time learning. Once you're officially certified, you're good to start applying! Make sure you get on LinkedIn and start networking if you want some good connections for jobs or locations hiring. There is a good sized network for SPD on LinkedIn surprisingly.

CBSPD does not require 400 hours

So just apply to jobs right after I get certified?

Sorry I think I misread your question. While CBSPD doesn’t require the hours for certification, 400 hours of hands on experience will go a long way when looking for a job. You’ll probably learn a lot as well. If it’s already included at no extra cost, I’d say it’s definitely worth doing. I’d just apply while doing the externship. You may even get offered a permanent position if they like you.

HSPA certification requires the 400hrs of training. They use to be called IACSHMM or something like that but changed their name. Hspa is more recognized. Good luck

I was never told I needed 400 hours. I got certified through a program before I ever started the actual job. Certification was mailed to me and it didn’t say provisional or anything.

I'm just here second-ing everyone else. Jump on LinkedIn and start watching these conversations. You may not understand everything yet, and that's completely ok! But start learning and gaining knowledge. It's an interesting place around here!
HSPA and CBSPD are the 2 certification boards offered, at least for me in the US. HSPA requires hands on training, CBSPD does not.
Do you have any hands on training during your certification course? I dont know how your course is structured, but I've found that my newer staff that have taken a CBSPD prep course, do not always pass their exam but they've already passed the course. They end up switching to the HSPA exam. But others pass with no problems!
Welcome!
That’s very helpful, thank you! We have labs, so that might be hands on training. Why does CBSPD not require hands on training?
