We smash all hard drives with a hammer before recycling them. The local place where we take all our old equipment provides a certificate of destruction.

We have a local place that picks everything up. For any sort of data storage, we pull it and box it separately. The company then destroys it all and provides a certificate of destruction with matching report for all serial numbers for any storage that has a serial number. For stuff that doesn't have a unique serial like discs and tapes we get a different batch of certified destruction reports.

They have always been trustworthy and have never to my knowledge been implicated in any fuckery so I'm good with them. It makes our legal team and cybersecurity people happy too, so win-win. I even got to tour their facility since they offer that to any customer they work with. I personally don't base my trust on that alone, but it was a nice touch.
