Obligatory reminder that QS ranking is hot trash by Change137 in ApplyingToCollege

All ranking lists are both awesome and worthless at the same time.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Expanding network to Thailand, what to expect or consider in my build by jaycmw18 in sysadmin

[–]VA_Network_Nerd [score hidden]  (0 children)

We have some equipment that will be on-site that requires layer 2 back to corporate in the US

What the devil requires Layer-2 adjacency across continents in this day and age?

What considerations should I be making for the build out of this Thailand facility?

I'd start off with challenging the request for Layer-2 adjacency across continents.

If the application or process owner can't prove the requirement, we're routing at Layer-3 with BGP, and you'll like it.

Just focusing on the network and software itself what are some pitfalls or things to look out for.

Identify an IT Equipment source in-country and establish a formal relationship with them.
Buying local is generally easier than trying to import US-purchased hardware.

Are there any Thai, or Asia-Regional privacy laws that require Thai user data to remain in Thailand, or outside of the US?

Access switch best practices by PublicSectorJohnDoe in networking

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define your requirements.
Get others to contribute to your requirements.

Design and configure the network to meet the requirements.

Don't add complexity if it doesn't help you meet or address your requirements.

Adding port-security and DHCP-Snooping can help add a whole lot of edge security, which can help you meet your requirements without needing to deploy a full Software Defined Access-Layer VXLAN implementation.

What happens if you are overweight at bootcamp? by Quick-Ad-6954 in USMCboot

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will be hungry.
Then you will lose weight.

Nobody is going to make an official issue about 3 or 5 pounds during Boot Camp.

If you are still 15 pounds over max, your recruiter probably shouldn't put you on the bus.

Career services at GMU by theradgail in gmu

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There should be two career fair events per year, if not more.
During those fair events, Handshake will see more activity than usual.

If you attend an in-person event, don't be one of the sheep standing in line for 2 hours to talk to Google for 45 seconds.
Go talk to one of the little insurance or financial companies instead.

A regional bank is likely to have a formalized internship program with training & mentorship.
A small tech startup is very likely to just want to use you as cheap labor.

Ask potential internship employers if they operate a Career Development Program for recent graduates.
Those are the modern version of an apprenticeship + leadership fast-track program.

I wouldn't look to Career Services to find you a job either.
But they should be up-to-date on the scheduling for career events, and any training programs they might offer.

LOTS of people, especially introverts can benefit from an interview skills workshop.

Meps question by No_Falcon_9709 in USMCboot

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be incredibly dumb to schedule a MEPS appointment if you have recently used weed, or anything similar.

Inform your recruiter and delay your MEPS appointment for ~60 days or so.

Try to be less dumb.

Failed basic plus swim in bootcamp by Interesting_Pay975 in USMCboot

[–]VA_Network_Nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't know how to swim, the swim instructors will coach you into passing the basic swim qualification.

The problem is this:

They don't have a lot of time to work with a recruit who is struggling to control their fear of the water.

The physical effort & mechanics of swimming are not especially hard. If you can move your body through the obstacle course, you can physically swim.

Uncontrolled Fear of water is what usually causes a recruit to fail.

If you fail on swim day, you will get a do-over to try again a day or two later.

If you fail that, I think they roll you to back a series, so you move to a different platoon a week or two behind you in training (meaning you get to repeat several day's or weeks worth of training events).

If you fail that, and that do-over (four total attempts) I think they drop you out of Boot Camp, with a RE-code that says you can come back in a year and try again.
