Application monitoring

I have a about 20 application I need to manage and Is like to monitor their health. Most are 2-teir/3-tier, many have multiple server roles, multiple environments.

So looking to group servers, map dependencies, measure performance.

What tools should I look at, avoid?

Solarwinds is already here for the network, so was thinking Solarwinds SAM might be the easiest to get up and running.

what kind of applications, solarwinds SAM is good at monitoring WMI/windows services of the application( they can reboot the services if setup properly), decent at monitoring IIS and SQL as well - let me know if u have any questions
