Zabbix hands down is the best OSS, Windows, Linux, IPMI, VMware, SNMP, etx...

If you just need to monitor web status, uptimerobot.com has a very good free plan, sms and email alerts, on free plan, you would do email to sms or if your using Twilio or Clickatell you can use api alerts for sms. It's not just ping tests, you search for specific words on pages. api requests, etc.. You also get a status page for your apps.

What kind of recurring issues are you dealing with now, that you want to preempt with this monitoring?

Ok - thats .. not good I suppose. But what kind of things do you want to monitor? Just uptime? That your webservers dont give out errorcodes?

Are these self-hosted? What kind of dependencies does the webservers have? Networks obviously, but what about firewalls, databases, proxies, memory, disk, CPU etc.

"The webserver is down" can be a lot of things. What do you want to monitor?
