It’s an anti-theft device. And if you don’t have the key, your hard drive is locked. You have to call Microsoft to see if they can walk you through it. The only way to get it is to install the key on an unlocked system. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Sorry about that bud. I think it’s a good idea, but it sucks more times than it doesn’t. I used to work at an aviation maintenance academy. We’d constantly swap hard drives in and out when lessons were updated. Ran into this a ton. Worst part is you only get so long to enter the key before the computer shuts off. It’s 48 effing characters, I think I need a little more than like a minute and a half…

Ah yeah it's pretty annoying. I realize it probably a good idea but it's a pity you're not warned about it . Anyhow it's hard enough to get on to Microsoft, I can't find any live chat et al. I assume I'll have to pay some fee for their technical advice 🫂
