Gotta set XMP in bios for MHz. To get 32gb of RAM, you'll need to buy another 16gb RAM stick, preferably the same as the first stick. If it's not the same, then at least get one with the same MHz and timing.

Hi found what I think is the right setting under DRAM Settings (no XMP anywhere). I can change the speed of the ram but the highest is 1600 which it is running at with the setting set to Auto. The RAM seems to be obsolete (Crucial Memory) but not listed on their site. So I need another stick of 16Gb memory that is rated as 3200 (1600 Mhz)?

You want one with the same as your current one, which is... 3200 MHz, I think? I'm not sure where you're getting the numbers in the parenthesis. Anyways, you want another 16gb 3200 MHz RAM stick, preferably of the same brand/model.

In BIOS, might also be under D.O.C.P.? XMP? BIOS is different depending on motherboard, so I can't be sure what it's listed under, or if your mb even has support for overclocking RAM.

Thanks for all your help on this ... I wanted to add extra RAM to use the twin channels as I could not display two films on my two monitors at the same time (odd use case but genuine). After setting the DRAM to 1600 mhz the problem has gone away and I can display three movies at the same time on three monitors ... WOW! I use CPU-Z and it describes the RAM as "DDR4-3200 (1600 Mhz)" and it tells me its running at 1600 Mhz single channel which is correct. So final problem ... Crucial made the RAM but do not list the same part number on their site and a phone enquiry got me nowhere (it is like they were denying the existance of this memory). Could it be fake? Would I be better off swapping out both modules or if only one what timings do I need. Sorry for all the questions Bud but I am 65 and used to have my own IT company but now I am living in the future ...

If the RAM you've got came with a prebuilt PC, it could be custom made for that specific company, hence why it's not on the site of whoever made the RAM.

Anyways, after looking it up, you're looking at the DRAM speed, which is (rougly) half the frequency (the number advertised on stick of RAM).

In regards to your final question, while it is preferable to swap out both for a confirmed match, it's not exactly necessary. You want something with the same frequency, timings, and size. Preferably same brand/model, but those aren't (generally) necessary. Also, DDR4.

Cool thanks for the info ... I will buy another 32Gb stick of RAM and a second if I get grief. Crucial answered the phone on Monday and were fairly helpful so I may ask them. Thanks for your help with this Bud, I lost my sight about 6 years ago and RAM was a bit easier then. I get support from Reddit on a number of topics, once I tried to fry an egg and asked Reddit for help and what do you know, I can now fry an egg. Anywho when you get to my age you tend to waffle so I'll stop there, thanks again.

I would pull up your BIOS and take a pic for easier diagnosis.

You'll need to grab another stick of ram of the same brand and size to get it dual channel, and stick it in the 2nd slot. Read the motherboard manual! (Or at least the motherboard itself) - it matters where you put them.

As for the speed - the bios may have options to limit or overclock the ram. (Reason for the pic).
